It is not required to reach the guest carriage ending, but completionists should run this chain before entering Aldous’s room—later story gating makes backtracking annoying on a first playthrough. Why timing matters

Enter Aldous’s room only after you either:

• Complete the easter egg chain below, or
• Consciously skip it for a faster first ending.

The egg puzzle interacts with the same bird used in the berry gate later. Doing the easter egg first prevents inventory confusion and ensures you see the hint paper before morning rush distractions.

1. Find the locked box that accepts a numeric code.
2. Enter 728.

Step 1 — Locate the locked box

During early estate exploration—after you have access to interior rooms but before Aldous’s bedroom sequence—search side areas near the entrance and corridors. Rusty Lake boxes usually resemble small safes or ornate chests with digit wheels or keypad UI.

If you cannot find it, finish the maid introduction and contract signing from the Demo walkthrough until more foyer hotspots unlock, then recheck.

Step 2 — Enter code 728

Input 7, 2, 8 on the box mechanism. Successful entry opens the container or triggers a nearby event. Wrong codes typically reset without penalty—double-check you found the correct box; portrait safe 235 is a different puzzle.

728 is easter-egg specific. Do not confuse it with cooking or shaving items.

Step 3 — Black bird egg

Collect the black bird egg from the opened box or an adjacent reveal. It sits in inventory like any key item. Keep it until the wall hand trade—do not feed it to the bird during the later earlobe puzzle; that is a separate mainline step.

Step 4 — Follow the bird

After the box opens, a bird may fly or hop to a new hotspot. Click through the bird’s path—follow the bird across scenes until interaction options exhaust. This navigation teaches estate layout useful for the map hub and foreshadows mainline berry logic.

If the bird seems idle, revisit rooms you unlocked post-contract; the bird event sometimes requires one extra environmental click (lamp, window, or perch).

Step 5 — Wall hand trade

Locate the surreal hand emerging from the wall—a classic Rusty Lake motif. Use the black bird egg on the hand. The animation consumes the egg and prepares the reward slot.

Hands rarely accept wrong items; if nothing happens, confirm you hold the black egg from code 728, not berries or the shaved earlobe from later mainline content.

Step 6 — Hint paper reward

After the trade, pick up the hint paper from the hand or nearby reveal. Read it carefully; hint text may clarify optional imagery or foreshadow premium story beats without spoiling unreleased puzzles. Store it in inventory for reference during Aldous morning routine if you proceed immediately afterward.

Relationship to mainline puzzles

The easter egg runs parallel to required tasks:

• Portrait 235 — Main story safe near entrance.
• Porridge chain — Kitchen required for morning gate.
