Vanderboom Estate Overview

The Vanderboom estate in Servant of the Lake is the latest Rusty Lake setting tied to Aldous, William, and Alexandra Vanderboom circa 1839. The free Demo drops you off by carriage, asks you to sign a servant contract, and confines exploration to the ground floor plus one upstairs shelf room before funneling you into Aldous’s morning routine. This overview describes only spaces you can actually enter in the Demo build— not the full mansion promised for August 13, 2026.

Think of the estate as a hub-and-spoke layout: the entrance hall is the hub; kitchen, stairs, maid station, and Aldous’s door are spokes. Backtracking is normal; the map reduces wasted loops while you hunt portraits, matches, and stove fuel.

Arrival — carriage yard (exterior)

Your first playable space is outside the house:

  • Coach interior — Curtains, striped cup puzzle, departure trigger.
  • Yard — Horse and carrot, coachman coin exchange, iron bar under departed carriage.
  • Planter plank — Hidden estate key pried with the iron bar.
  • Front door — Unlocks into the entrance hall.

Exterior logic is documented on the Demo walkthrough opening; no interior map entry is required until the door opens.

Entrance hall (central hub)

Once inside, the hall anchors the Demo:

  • Maid — Crow feather, contract table, breakfast assignment after signing.
  • Contract table — Ink signature gate.
  • Milk crate — Near maid station for porridge.
  • Left door — Leads to the kitchen.
  • Right stairs — Lead to pot shelf and 235 cabinet (see portrait code).
  • Forward paths — Central hall with cat chair and family portraits; route to Aldous’s bedroom after porridge is ready.

The hall is the most visited room; memorize its exits before timed routine steps in the bedroom.

Left wing — kitchen

Detailed layout on the kitchen map. Summary: wood, oats, recipe note, and stove for porridge. Servants visit twice— once for ingredients, once to heat the pot— often passing through the hall to fetch matches after the cat leaves its chair.

Right wing — upstairs shelf room

Short upstairs segment in the Demo:

  • Small pot on shelf (needed before heating).
  • Locked breakfast cabinet below shelf (code 235).
  • Wall hole — Yields dead mouse for cat exchange in hall.

This room links observation puzzles (portraits elsewhere) to inventory puzzles (sugar, pot).

Central hall — cat and portraits

Between major doors, the central hall holds:

  • Cat on chair — Blocks matches until fed the mouse.
  • Vanderboom portraits — Aldous, Alexandra, William animations for 235.
  • Optional wall hand hole — Used in easter egg 728 chain with black bird egg.

Portrait placement is enumerated on the rooms guide.

Aldous wing — bedroom

The bedroom is a self-contained routine arena documented on Aldous’s room map. Enter with porridge pot after kitchen work; exit through the window view toward the guest carriage when the six morning gates complete.

Demo boundary vs full game (speculation labeled)

Official store text promises a long weekend, guest arrivals, and deeper alchemical secrets in the premium release. The Demo explicitly ends when you tap the approaching guests’ carriage after dressing Aldous. The following are not walkable in the Demo despite trailer teases:

  • Guest bedrooms or dining halls for arriving visitors.
  • Basement laboratories or lake docks beyond window silhouettes.
  • Additional servant quarters or multi-day calendar spaces.

We avoid drawing speculative floor plans for those areas. When the full game launches, this overview will split into Demo (1839 morning) and full estate sections with verified navigation.

Suggested first-day route through the estate

  1. Yard to hall (key and contract).
  2. Hall to upstairs (pot, mouse, portrait counts).
  3. Hall to kitchen (wood, oats) and back for matches via cat.
  4. Kitchen heat porridge; optional 728 detour if chasing easter egg.
  5. Hall to Aldous bedroom for routine and carriage finale.

What year is the Vanderboom estate set in?

The Demo and marketing place Servant of the Lake during the Aldous and William Vanderboom era, commonly cited as 1839 within Rusty Lake canon.

Can I explore the whole mansion in the Demo?
