Servant of the Lake Insect and Berries Puzzle
Earlobe-to-bird key chain, berry holes, and squashing the bug before breakfast ends.
After you serve plain porridge to Aldous Vanderboom, he insists something is still missing. Adding berries from the locked dresser drawer fixes the flavor—but Rusty Lake hides an insect beneath the fruit, and Aldous will not finish breakfast until you drive it out and squash it. This puzzle is entirely contained in Aldous’s room and assumes you already completed shaving (including the severed earlobe) and the porridge recipe chain.
No numeric code appears here. Progress depends on inventory order, window interaction, and manipulating berry-covered holes in the breakfast bowl.
Prerequisites checklist
Before the insect appears, confirm these Demo gates:
- Porridge is in Aldous’s bowl and he has commented that something is missing.
- Shaving is far enough along that you hold the earlobe (removed after the final razor stroke).
- Bowl and spoon were given to Aldous earlier in the morning routine.
- You have not skipped the portrait code 235 sugar chain— without proper porridge, later steps soft-lock.
If any item above is missing, return to the Demo walkthrough morning section rather than forcing berry holes early.
Step 1 — Earlobe to bird for the dresser key
- Open the bedroom window.
- Feed the earlobe to the bird outside.
- The bird returns a key.
- Use the key on the top dresser drawer.
- Collect the berries from inside.
The earlobe comes from Aldous’s shave sequence, not from the kitchen. You cannot borrow berries from another room; the drawer is keyed specifically to this bird exchange.
Step 2 — Add berries to the bowl
Add the berries to the porridge bowl on the table. Aldous may comment that the meal still is not right— that cue triggers the insect minigame inside the bowl rather than a failed recipe.
If nothing changes after adding berries, verify porridge was already served and the earlobe step completed. The insect logic does not activate on an empty bowl.
Step 3 — Berry holes and insect movement
Inspect the porridge surface: berries sit over holes, and an insect moves between them when exposed.
Core loop:
- Drag one berry away from its hole, opening that path.
- Watch where the insect emerges at another hole.
- Cover the hole the insect uses with a berry, blocking that exit.
- Repeat— force the insect through remaining openings by alternating which hole is open and which is blocked.
- When the insect is cornered, squash it.
This is a path-blocking puzzle, not a timing reflex test. Deliberate drags beat rapid tapping on the spoon.
Troubleshooting movement
- Insect never appears — Berries may not be in the bowl yet; add them after the key drawer step.
- Dragging does nothing — Pull a berry fully clear of its hole instead of selecting the spoon.
- Stuck after one move — Re-open a different hole by moving another berry; the insect needs at least one uncovered path to animate.
Community walkthroughs describe slightly different insect paths, but all agree on the method: move berries, block the active hole, continue until squashable.
Step 4 — Spoon-feeding gate
After the insect is gone, use the spoon to feed Aldous multiple times. A single spoonful does not clear breakfast. Keep interacting until he states he has had enough— only then does the morning routine advance toward the toy soldier exercise and dressing sequence.
Skipping repeated spoonfuls is a common reason the guest carriage never triggers at the window even when exercise and clothes are done later.
How this puzzle fits the morning routine
The insect berries step is gate four in Aldous’s written routine (after wake, shave, and initial breakfast attempt). It bridges porridge and the exercise pattern copied from the toy soldier. Codes like 235 and optional 728 do not apply here.

- Portrait code 235 — Sugar before porridge.
- Porridge recipe — Stove chain leading to this bowl.

Full game speculation
The Demo ends shortly after dressing Aldous and spotting the guest carriage. Whether berries, insects, or bird exchanges return in the August 13, 2026 full release is unknown. Any future breakfast variants will be documented separately after verified play; this page remains the Demo-specific insect-hole solution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How do I get the key for the berry drawer?
Open Aldous's window, feed the severed earlobe from shaving to the bird outside, and take the key it returns. Use it on the top dresser drawer.
How do I squash the insect in the porridge?
Drag berries off holes to expose paths, then cover whichever hole the insect uses next. Keep blocking and opening holes until you can squash the bug.
Why won't Aldous eat after I add berries?
You must remove the insect first, then spoon-feed him multiple times until he says he has had enough. One spoonful is not sufficient.
Can I do the insect puzzle before getting sugar?
No. You need proper porridge in the bowl first, which requires sugar from portrait code 235 and the full kitchen chain.
Is the earlobe used anywhere else in the Demo?
The bird key exchange is its primary purpose in the Demo bedroom. Complete shaving cleanly with the cloth before serving breakfast so the earlobe is available.
